Chinese Medicine Herbal Garden of the School of Chinese Medicine, The University of Hong Kong

The Chinese Medicine Herbal Garden of the School of Chinese Medicine at The University of Hong Kong is a Lingnan-characteristic medicinal plant garden established with funding from the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Development Fund (Project No.: 22B2_007A_R1). The garden features 14 plant beds that currently cultivate over 180 species of medicinal plants, most of which are distinctive to the Lingnan region. These include authentic Lingnan medicinal materials, commonly used Chinese herbs, herbs frequently employed in clinical practice, toxic herbs commonly found in Hong Kong, dual-purpose medicinal and edible resources, as well as herbs commonly used in herbal teas.

Adhering to green and eco-friendly principles, the garden is equipped with two automated irrigation systems—ground drip irrigation and overhead sprinkler irrigation—and is regularly maintained by professionals through weeding, pruning, trellising, sterilization, pest control, and fertilization to ensure healthy growth of all plants. A stable and sustainable micro-ecosystem has thus been established. Building on this foundation, the School has further utilized VR technology to create an online virtual digital herbal garden, forming an integrated online-offline learning space. The digital garden faithfully reproduces the landscape and vegetation of the physical garden and supports remote immersive visits and interactive learning.

As an important resource for The University of Hong Kong and the local community, this Chinese Medicine Herbal Garden serves multiple functions in education, scientific research, and public outreach. It provides tangible support for enhancing the ability of Chinese medicine practitioners and students to identify and apply Lingnan-characteristic medicinal plants.
