Prof. Zhang’s current research interest focuses on seeking novel psychotropic agents and developing effective treatment strategies from traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture against major psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, cognitive disorders, drug addiction, and schizophrenia. He has directed a series of studies evaluating the effectiveness of new interventions in clinical settings and characterizing psychopharmacological and therapeutic properties of novel constituents extracted from medicinal plants by means of behavioral, molecular, and biochemical approaches.

Prof. Zhang is also interested in herb-drug pharmacokinetic interactions, neural basis of acupuncture, and the identification of the pathogenesis of major psychiatric disorders, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and major depressive disorder (MDD). Prof. Zhang has established an extensive network of collaboration with colleagues outside Hong Kong for conducting clinical investigations.
