Abstract

Control on Trade in Endangered Species in Hong Kong SAR

The Government of the HKSAR is committed to the protection of endangered species and abides by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in the regulation of trade in endangered species. This is implemented locally through the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance (Cap. 586), which requires to obtain licences issued by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department in advance for the import, introduction from the sea, export, re-export, or possession of specimens of a scheduled species. The Government also monitors and combats illegal trade in endangered species, while continuing to educate the public, students and traders on species protection and compliance with the law.
